What is general medicine?
General medicine, also referred to as general internal medicine, refers to the field of medical practice that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of various diseases and conditions that affect the internal organs. Some examples of the internal diseases and conditions treated by general medicine doctors include chronic lung disease, diabetes (type 1 and type 2), heart disease, hypertension, obesity, and many others. Typically, general medicine doctors, or internists, only see and treat illnesses that afflict adults.
What makes internal medicine doctors different from other doctors?
Since there is a multitude of different medical specialties and subspecialties, most doctors have a particular organ or area of the body that they focus on and treat. For example, cardiologists concentrate on preventing, diagnosing, and treating heart conditions, pulmonologists specialize in lung conditions, and rheumatologists focus on diseases that affect the bones, joints, and muscles. While this enables doctors to have a unique level of expertise in a particular field of medicine, it also makes it so that there is a different doctor for every part of the body!
However, the difference between internal medicine doctors and specialist doctors is that internal medicine doctors specialize in treating both common illnesses and complex medical conditions that affect any of the internal organs. In this way, whereas specialists have their hands tied when it comes to a condition or illness that falls outside their specialty, internal medicine doctors function as a jack of all trades within the medical field.
