Shoulder Pain Q & A

What causes shoulder pain and dysfunction?

Shoulder pain and stiffness are usually caused by:

  • A tendon problem like bursitis, tendinitis, or a tear
  • Arthritis, a degenerative condition of your shoulder joint
  • A broken bone or bones in your shoulder

A fracture is an acute injury, so it can be repaired and you heal in a relatively straightforward, efficient manner. Arthritis, tendinitis, and bursitis, however, are chronic conditions that result from wear-and-tear as well as age. Degenerative shoulder pain from osteoarthritis can also set in after a shoulder injury.

When should I suspect shoulder osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis describes the condition in which your cartilage, the connective tissue that protects your joint by providing cushioning between your bones, wears away. This can lead to symptoms like:

  • Pain in your shoulder during or after movement
  • Inability to lift your arm or rotate your shoulder
  • Stiffness in your joint in the morning or after a period of inactivity
  • Tenderness in the area around your shoulder joint
  • Bones rubbing together cause a grating feeling in the joint
  • Bone spurs around your shoulder

As you age, your risk of shoulder arthritis increases. You’re also at greater risk if you’ve had a previous shoulder injury.

How is shoulder pain treated?

Shoulder pain can be effectively treated by Dr. Schub and the practitioners at Sunshine State Medical Inc. You don’t have to live with shoulder pain or stop participating in the activities you enjoy.

Dr. Schub does nerve conduction velocity tests (NCV) to determine the fitness of your nerve impulses in order to detect signs of injury or damage in your shoulder. Electromyography assesses the health of your muscles and nerve cells as well.

The results of these tests help guide your treatment. You could benefit from chiropractic adjustments, physical therapy, medications, and/or lifestyle changes.

Dr. Schub works with you to develop a customized treatment plan that provides you with long-lasting pain relief.
