Headache Q & A

What are the different types of headaches?

All headaches involve pain or discomfort in your head, scalp, or neck, but the nature and severity of headaches vary widely. The different types of headaches and their symptoms include:

Tension headaches

These feel like having a tight band squeezing your head and can last from several minutes to several days.

Cluster headaches

These headaches cause concentrated pain behind your eyes or on one side of your head. They can happen every day and more than once a day and can last for extended periods of time (called the “cluster period”) of up to six weeks.

Migraine headaches

Migraines cause intense throbbing and pounding and typically only occur on one side of the head.

Rebound headaches

Rebound headaches happen when you stop taking medication that you typically use to treat headaches.

Thunderclap headaches

These come on very quickly, typically without warning, and last a short time, typically up to five minutes. They are most often severe and can indicate a problem with the blood vessels in your brain.

What causes a headache?

Some headaches are conditions in and of themselves (primary headaches), while others are symptoms of an underlying condition (secondary headaches). Primary headaches and secondary headaches have different causes.

Primary causes

Primary causes are those that are unrelated to underlying medical conditions and typically involve issues with the pain-sensitive structures in your head. Some common primary causes of headaches include:

  • Chemical activity in your brain
  • Complications with the nerves or blood vessels around your skull
  • Problems with your head and neck
  • Drinking too much alcohol
  • Certain foods like nitrate-laden processed meats
  • Bad posture
  • Skipping meals
  • Stress
  • Sleep deprivation

Some people are also genetically predisposed to headaches. Cluster, migraine, and tension headaches are examples of common primary-cause headaches.

Secondary causes

Some headaches are actually not issues in and of themselves but rather symptoms of a disease or condition. The list of conditions that can cause secondary headaches is lengthy but some examples include:

  • Brain tumor or aneurysm
  • Meningitis
  • Sinusitis
  • Concussion
  • Dehydration
  • Panic attacks or panic disorder
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Glaucoma
  • Stroke

A secondary-cause headache can even be something as innocuous as a brain freeze (ice cream headache).
