Why do you need an annual physical?
Annual physicals are a great way to stay on top of your overall health. While annual physicals are not mandatory, they are recommended by most physicians, especially for individuals who are over the age of 50. Annual physicals provide an opportunity for you to discuss with your physician any ongoing pain or symptoms you are experiencing, and for your physician to check for possible diseases, potential risks and concerns to look out for and prevent, update any vaccinations, and ensure that you are maintaining a healthy diet, exercise routine, and lifestyle. The primary purpose of an annual physical is the prevention and early detection of disease or chronic conditions.
Why do you need a sports physical?
If you are venturing into a new sport or physical activity or a new sports season is approaching, a sports physical can ensure that it is safe for you to participate in that sport or activity. With a sports physical, your doctor can alert you to any potential concerns that could arise with your specific sport or activity of choice, as well as any modifications you could incorporate into your participation to prevent injury or to avoid worsening a present condition. Without a sports physical, you can find out too late about a weakness or damage that is exacerbated by participating in the sport or activity without proper caution and technique.
Why do you need a school physical?
According to the Florida Department of Health, school physicals are required for every student making their initial entry into a Florida school. The primary purpose of such physicals is to ensure that the student is up to date with vaccinations and does not pose a health or safety risk to the student body population. However, school physicals can also provide preventative benefits and alert you and your child to any extra support they could need to succeed and thrive in school. As such, school physicals can screen for mental illness, behavioral concerns, and physical conditions or illnesses that may impact the student’s performance at school.
What should I expect at a physical?
While the specific details of a physical vary depending on the type of physical and the concerns that are unique to the individual receiving the physical, there are generally some standard things to expect with any physical.
As such, most physicals will begin with a review of your medical history unless the doctor is thoroughly familiar with that history from past physicals. This review of your medical history will consist of questions about previous hospitalizations, medications you are taking, conditions or diseases present in the family, allergies or conditions that you have been diagnosed with, and any general concerns you have about your health.
Once the medical history review is complete, the examination will shift to a physical assessment of your lungs, heart, ears, eyes, throat, abdomen, joints, muscles, strength, reflexes, and vital signs. Depending on the purpose of the physical, the doctor may focus more on one area than another. For example, a sports physical may require more assessment of the health of your joints, reflexes, and muscles than a school physical would.
Depending on what your medical history and physical assessment reveal, the doctor may recommend further testing to address any concerns or ensure that your health is in peak condition.
